Welcome to RSCA’s monthly newsletter. We hope to provide timely and interesting news items affecting our community.

1. Discovery Elementary School Opens: Principal Erin Russo says, “School will open on Tuesday, September 8. “ There will be an open house for grades 1 and 2 on September 3 from 8:30am to 10:30am. During the first hour students can meet their teachers and during the second hour familiarize themselves with the school. This format will repeat itself for grades 3-5 on September 4 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. There may be parts of the school and fields that are unfinished. Construction will continue after school hours and during the weekends until finished. 2. The Stratford Site Project: Arlington Public School Board is discussing how to balance the needed design elements for the new/renovated middle school with the requests for keeping the historic components of the building intact. The APS web site says, “Recognizing the historic significance of the Stratford site, possible plans include taking advantage of the historic site opportunity to create an atrium between the existing building and the new addition to preserve the architecture and create a unique learning environment and teaching tool about school integration in Arlington and Virginia.” Sun Gazette article:

Fire Station #8 Meeting: Thursday, September 17, Yorktown High School, Use door #8
County staff will summarize process, discuss results from past meetings and present recommendations to be shared with the County Board. http://projects.arlingtonva.us/projects/fire-station-8/

4. Can you believe Yorktown High School’s first football game is on September 4 at Wilson High School in DC? The first home game is the following week, September 11 against Wakefield. Football schedule; All sports

Arlington Affordable Housing Month: September 2 is the kick off for the Affordable Housing Month Events, See flyer If you would like to know more about the Affordable Housing Plan, please see the Master Plan here. Mary Hynes, Chair of the Arlington County Board says, “Members of the public will be able to testify at the Saturday, September 19th, County Board public hearing.  If you wish to convey your thoughts to us in advance of the meeting, emails sent to countyboard@arlingtonva.us will be shared with all Board members.” The Plan will most likely go to the County Board in September for adoption.

6. The Arlington Community Facilities Planning Study is a "long-range, collaborative planning effort that will build a consensus framework regarding the community’s future funding and facility needs."  In January, 2015, the Arlington County Board and the Arlington School Board launched this broad-based, year-long community facilities planning effort.  Community members are welcome and encouraged to be involved.  The next meeting, is scheduled for Wed, September 9, 7-10pm at the Parks and Natural Resources Operations Building, 2700 S Taylor St.  For more information, see http://commissions.arlingtonva.us/community-facilities-study/.
