August 2015 Update
Old Dominion Drive Improvements
On January 24, 2015, the Arlington County Board approved a $7.3 million contract awarded to A&M Concrete Corporation for the construction of the Old Dominion Drive transportation multi-modal project along Old Dominion Drive from 38th Street N. to west of North Glebe Road. This is the second and final phase of a project designed to improve safety along more than a mile of Old Dominion Drive.
Phase I of this project, approved by the County Board in 2009, brought much-needed infrastructure and safety improvements to the stretch of Old Dominion Drive between 22nd and 26th Streets North.
In Phase II, sidewalks will be built on both sides of the heavily travelled roadway and improve accessibility and safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Old Dominion Drive is one of the last arterials located within a County neighborhood without sidewalks on either side. The project also will upgrade:
- Curbs and gutters
- Crosswalks
- Traffic and pedestrian signals
- Street lights
- Bus stops, and
- Storm water facilities
$2.34 Million in VDOT Funding
The total contract cost for the project, including contingency, is $7.3 million. Of that, $2.34 million is being provided by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The rest of the funding will come from voter-approved bonds and State HB2313 transportation funding. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2016.
